St Swithun’s Pre-School Southsea

chartered surveyors southseaOur Building Surveying and Architectural Department have been instrumental in the conversion of a school caretaker’s house into a state of the art day nursery at St Swithun’s Catholic Primary School in Southsea.

The building surveying team were instructed in November 2017 to undertake a feasibility study to convert the existing caretaker’s 3-bedroom house into a pre-school.  Our Architectural department undertook a measured survey, drew up the plans and subsequently applied for planning permission for change of use and also applied for Building Regulation approval.

Our Building Surveying team met with the school team and wrote the specification for the works and tendered it to local contractors. Following tendering the works were instructed with a tight deadline as the school wanted to open the nursery at the commencement of the autumn term.  Daniells Harrison were also contract administrators for the works and with the hard work and assistance of the contractors, the works to convert the house into the day nursery were completed on time for the school to open the nursery as scheduled. The school were very pleased with the outcome and that the building on the site could be put into a new role.

The works were comprehensive with internal alteration to provide a day care nursery with further full external refurbishment and clearing and landscaping of the garden to create a safe play area for the children. Internal works included removal of internal partition walls and installation of structural steels to create an open plan nursery on the ground and first floors within.

Following tendering the works were instructed in June 2018 and completed for the start of the new school year in September 2018.

The pre-school, named ‘Sunbeams’, benefits from two large rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs with interactive whiteboards, quiet area, messy area and play area.  In addition, the pre-school has custom-built children’s toilet areas on both floors, kitchen areas for snack preparation, private meeting room for parents/carers and staff, and a dedicated outdoor play area which can be used all year round.  It has capacity for 24 children.

A great example of the collaborative work carried out by the Building Surveying and Architectural departments at Daniells Harrison Chartered Surveyors.
